If you’ve heard of Betternet, a service that promises a free and easy to use VPN without registration, you’ve probably thought of a question before anyone else. The question is whether it is safe to use Betternet VPN.

In this article we look at different aspects of Betternet and try to get an idea of how it relates to other VPNs, whether it is safe to use and whether it can actually deliver on its promises.

What is Betternet?

Betternet is a free VPN service that promises to offer free VPN features.

There is now a paid version of the application for Android and iOS, but this review focuses on the free version, which is currently the flagship of the application. We have tested applications for Windows, Android and Chrome. At the time of writing, all functions are correct.

  • Peerblock via VPN
  • VPN or Seedbox?

What are the characteristics of Betternet?

Betternet offers many of the features you would expect from a VPN, as well as the ability to use the product without registration. Let’s take a look at some of their features:

Can be used without registration

Using Betternet is easy, and unlike most VPNs, there is absolutely no need to subscribe to a service before you can use it. This not only simplifies the configuration of the application, but also offers additional data protection benefits.

Applications for miscellaneous operating systems

It can be used on various platforms, including iOS, Android and Windows, as well as Chrome and Firefox browsers. The fact that you can use it with Firefox and Chrome means that while it is not possible to use Linux, you can use it with Linux.

One problem, however, was that there seemed to be differences in the services offered by different operating systems. We will examine this issue in more detail in the chapter on deficits.

Use like any other VPN

As with all paid VPNs, you can use Betternet to access geo-sites, encrypt your data while browsing and hide your IP address.

Easy to use

After installing the application, you must literally select the server location and click on the connection to use the VPN. It seems to work well and you communicate directly.

Bed net: Impairment losses

Betternet has many good properties, but the product certainly has some important flaws. This:

Server location

When you connect to Betternet, you have a very limited server capacity, and in any case (in the Chrome plugin) you have access to two different servers, one in the US and one in the UK. When most paid VPNs offer servers worldwide, this is incredibly limited.

It also means that you can only access obstructed content in these two countries. It also means that if you live far away from the UK and the US and do not have access to the website there, you may find that your speed is slower than with any other VPN.

There are also big differences between the servers available on the different platforms. With the Chrome plugin it is for example possible to choose between the United States and Great Britain. For the Android application this is only for the United States, although there are many options if you want to upgrade to their premium service.

At the same time, there is no choice for the Windows application. All you have to do is click on the connection without having to select a server. When we used the Windows application, it looked like we were connected to Switzerland. This is normal for the general public, although there is not much to gain from accessing obstructed content in the United States.

Betternet makes it clear that third parties may use technology (which may include cookies) to evaluate the effectiveness of their advertising. Betternet does not store your data itself, but may allow third parties to use this technology. You can read their full privacy policy here.

Are we suggesting that this might discourage some people?

Is it safe to use the Better Network?

Betternet is surprisingly honest about how they make their money. On their website there is a section called How we make money, which explains that they make money when someone installs a sponsored application from Betternet’s mobile application or when someone watches videos from the application.

They also have a premium version of the Android application, which has more servers and other features that allow them to make money.

For this reason, and assuming they’re telling the truth, it seems Betternet VPNs are safer to use than other free VPNs that can earn their money less clearly and perhaps illegally. Many free VPNs are probably completely safe!

Although there are many negative messages about free VPNs stealing your data or using your computer as a server, this does not seem to be the case with Betternet.

Conclusion: The best network is a good VPN?

As a free VPN, Betternet seems to be one of the most reliable, but it is not without its flaws. Let’s look at the pros and cons.

  • It’s really easy to use and requires no registration.
  • A reliable connection
  • There is no limit to the amount of data you can use and there is no data logging.
  • The lack of choice of the server makes it more difficult to access geographically limited content.
  • If a limited number of servers is slow – very bad – there is no other option!
  • It’s free – which can keep many users from knowing how secure their data really is.

In general, the advantages certainly outweigh the disadvantages of not having a server, but it is a major problem that can seriously affect the experience of Betternet users. It’s a good introduction to the world of VPN or a quick solution if you don’t have a lot of money, but not much more.

I hope you enjoyed our article on Betternet VPN.
